Recently, I attended a restorative yoga class, only my second-ever yoga session. Unfortunately, my experience was far from restorative. A substitute instructor arrived at the last minute, immediately began chanting “Om,” and provided no guidance on modifying postures for my overuse injuries.
Without direction, I struggled to maintain proper form and breathe correctly, making the class both physically and emotionally painful. By the end of the day, I felt not just sore but discouraged and defeated. I realized I should have spoken up sooner, but as a newcomer, I didn’t know what to expect.
To ensure a better experience for first-time fitness class participants, here are a few essential tips:
✅ Research the facility and instructor credentials—if they don’t meet your standards, look elsewhere.
✅ Arrive early to check in, complete paperwork, and get acclimated.
✅ Inform the instructor that you’re new if they don’t approach you first.
✅ Be upfront about any injuries or limitations to receive appropriate modifications.
✅ Pay attention to how your needs are addressed—if they’re dismissed, proceed with caution.
Always be a savvy fitness consumer. With so many excellent classes and instructors available, you can find the right fit for your needs and enjoy a positive, empowering experience.
